First Investitures at 28th!!
Wednesday 6 November 2002 was a very special night for everyone in Tamar Street. At the end of the Beaver Colony meeting Betty Robb, ADC Beavers, invested Ryan Uprichard, making him our second Beaver to be invested. The Cub Pack then met and following on at the end of the Pack meeting our first Cub Scout, Tammy Upritchard, and first Scout, Megan Upritchard, were invested by John Corry ADC Cubs. It was a very proud moment for all involved with the 28th Group to see these very special young people make their Promise, they are the first of many to come and we wish them well.

Tamar Street has been up and running since May and already we have a great bunch of kids, girls and boys, who are so keen for Scouting and have really enjoyed all the activities that they have been doing, which have included many varied games, craftwork, kite-making and cookery nights, to mention but a few.
We kept the Group going over part of the summer months and now that we have settled back into the Autumn the Group is ready to be divided into Beaver and Cub age groups, which will enable us to provide appropriate programmes for them. We also have a number of boys of Scout age waiting eagerly to join, but with the lack of Leaders we can not start the Scout Group yet. There is a great demand for Scouting in the area and all we need are the Leaders to get the Scout section up and running, but we also need Leaders for Beaver and Cub Sections too! If anyone is interested please let us know.
We have had several outings to Crawfordsburn, where the kids thoroughly enjoyed the Beaver Trail, Scalextric Cars and Climbing Walls and they are eager to return and hopefully we will get them away to Camp there in November. The Leaders went along to Mersey Street School Concert and enjoyed watching the girls performing their musical and dancing skills, so with this talent we hope to be able to put on a concert for their parents at some stage. We also plan to take them swimming and they are keen to start a football team!
Anyone wishing to call in on a Wednesday night will be most welcome. We start at 6.00-7.00pm for Beaver age group and continuing on 7.00-8.15pm with the cub age group - you are very welcome to call in to see what is going on or to lend a hand with a game, even for hour. Can we take this opportunity to invite along any former members of the old 28th to call in and see the blue and white scarf being worn again. We appreciated a visit from Rhoda and Ernie Sharp and hope that they will come back to see us soon.

Re-opening of 28th Group at Tamar Street
Update (March):With the new premises now secured at Tamar Street an Open Evening planned for Thursday 29th March will see the beginning of the re-establishment of 28th . It is hoped that registration of boys and girls of Beaver and Cub age will commence and 28th will be up and running. The new 28th G.S.L Jim Stitt along with N.I Field Commissioner, Sinclair Trotter, will initially take responsibility for the two Sections and East Development Team Leader, Brian Laffin, will be putting together a number of Scouters from the District on a rota basis to help out with these Sections . If you could help even one evening per month contact the D.C or Brian. The 28th Sections will probably meet on a Wednesday and Thursday evenings although this will be confirmed by the G.S.L. Over the summer months we hope to organise a number of work-parties at the Tamar Street Hall for general work, painting and work on the grounds and the possibility of a District Bar-b-q courtesy of the 28th. Details will follow.

We would ask for 100% support from the District in this project and it is a delight to announce that after a long absence from East Belfast Scouting the "New" 28th Belfast is about to recommence and start work in the lower Newtownards Road area. We wish G.S.L Jim Stitt and his team well for the future and hope to see the 28th again become an important part of East Belfast District Scouting.
Update (April):The Open Evening was recently held at Tamar Street and although we were not knocked down by the rush to join the new Group around 8 names have been added to the roll. The Beaver and Cub Scout sections will therefore recommence at the beginning of May with both Sections meeting initially on a Wednesday evening. It is hoped that through word of mouth and publicity over the summer months that numbers will have increased for re-starting in September. Can I thank the Scouters within the District who took the time and trouble to support GSL Jim Stitt at the Open Evening by helping out and would again appeal for more support from Groups and Leaders from the District.
It is our intention to organise ‘work parties’ over the summer at Tamar Street and I hope that the District will show their support by turning up and helping. On a very positive note, we are delighted to announce the appointment of Ernie and Rhoda Sharp as joint Presidents of the new 28th Group which will serve as an important link to the old 28th and a very experienced ‘back-up’ to the new GSL and his team.
